Gluten Free in NYC: 3 Spots to Fit Your Mood
Calling all celiacs, trendy dieters and foodies with sensitive stomachs! Say goodbye to the days of bloating and unapologetically sprinting to the toilet after every carb-filled meal out in the city. I present you with the ultimate guide to eating g-free in NYC.
FOR A QUICK BITE:
90 W 3rd St, New York, NY 10012
Whoever says that fast food can't be healthy has never been to Springbone Kitchen. This little spot specializes in the health benefits of drinking bone broth and eating vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. In short, bone broth is loaded with minerals and collagen so when you drink it your immune system is stronger and you are prettier. Just like that!
So, if a 100% grass-fed burger on a paleo bun with rice-milk cheese and a side of tumeric, ginger bone broth sounds #delish to you, Springbone is the place for you!
Here’s what I got:
Zoodles with grass-fed GF meatballs in their housemade tomato sauce (with organic parmesan, obviously).
And Grandma’s Chicken & Rice. Can’t decide between drinking warm lemon water for dinner or eating Chipotle for your 5th meal in a row? Consider this chicken and rice bowl a happy medium.
FOR A NIGHT OF WINING AND DINING:
206 Sullivan St, New York, NY 10012
Holy heck the chef at Senza is the guru of g-free cooking! From top to bottom the entire menu does not contain a single ounce of gluten…right down to the wheat free vodka cocktails and beers (wink, wink).
Crispy GF veggie flatbread pizza, a nod to my vegetarian pals.
Seriously, if gluten-less lasagna is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
GF pasta in a buttery, white wine clam sauce. They totally mastered the art of cooking g-free pasta al dente…which studies have shown is harder than both brain surgery and going on a run after Thanksgiving.
And for my personal favorite, the tomato and prosciutto sandwich with fresh mozz on a deliciously tender GF baguette.
FOR SOMETHING SWEET:
TU-LU’S GLUTEN FREE BAKERY
338 E 11th St, New York, NY 10003
I was so excited to go here because I have a very real sweet tooth (some might call it a cavity… @Dr.Greenberg) and the ladies at Tu Lu’s hooked me up! Cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts, high blood sugar… you name it, they got it.
Starting with the cupcakes: yes, your suspicions are correct.. there is a Reese’s cup stuffed inside that peanut butter one.
The cookies were outrageously soft and gooey. Sometimes GF cookies are overly sweet because they are overcompensating for the lack of gluten, but that was not the case at all with these. Perfectly balanced.
And after one bite of these doughnuts I immediately texted my celiac-ridden older sister the address to Tu-Lu’s with walking directions and a link to her nearest subway.
Honorable mention: their little bread loafs and asiago cheese muffins were super moist and the ideal items to have in a picnic basket (assuming you're from 1920s France and picnics are still a thing).
